The Typical Lifespan of Veneers
The length of time you can expect your veneers to last depends on the type you get. Porcelain and composite veneers, the two options we offer at Columbia Smiles, are both incredibly durable. With proper care, you will be certain that you get the most out of your veneers.Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are the longest-lasting option on the market. Made out of thin, custom-made porcelain shells, these veneers look realistic and can last for 10 years or more. In some cases, porcelain veneers have been known to last for as long as 20 years.Composite Veneers
Composite veneers are made out of resin and are typically made in-office. Resin is molded to your teeth and shaped into the look you want. This option is typically expected to last for at least five years, but these veneers have been known to be even more durable than that. Are You a Candidate for Veneers?
Not sure whether veneers are right for you? While a consultation with our dentist is the best way to know if you’re a good candidate for veneers, there are a few things that will determine whether or not veneers are the correct option for you.- Do you have healthy teeth and gums, with no signs of gum disease?
- Do you want straighter, whiter teeth?
- Do you grind your teeth?
- Do you have a sufficient amount of enamel on your teeth?
- Do you practice good oral hygiene?
The Veneers Process
Placing veneers starts with removing a thin layer of enamel from the teeth. This shouldn’t hurt, and it also shouldn’t affect the health or function of your teeth. For porcelain veneers, your dentist will create a mold of your teeth to send to a lab, where they’ll create custom-made porcelain shells. This process can take up to two weeks, during which your dentist can give you temporary veneers to wear. Then, in a secondary appointment, your dentist will place the veneers on the prepared teeth with a special, ultra-strong adhesive. For composite veneers, your dentist will likely be able to prepare the teeth and place the veneers at the same appointment. They will shape the resin on your tooth until it looks the way they want, then they will use a special light to set the veneer. Caring for your new veneers is simple. Just brush, floss, and visit your dentist regularly. Veneers should not become dislodged by normal activities. However, your dentist will check your veneers during regular appointments to determine if any need to be replaced over time.Connect with Columbia Smiles Today
