What is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria. Sugar and starch are the main food source for bacteria. When food particles remain in your mouth, bacteria feed off of the particles and emits an acid that damages the enamel of your teeth. This acid causes your enamel to lose calcium and phosphate, which leads to decay. Tooth decay also causes cavities, which are pits inside your tooth. When cavities are left untreated, bacteria can enter the interior of your tooth, causing an infection. Since tooth decay causes the enamel of your teeth to thin, you can experience discoloration. Enamel is the outermost layer of your tooth and protects your dentin and pulp from harmful particles. Untreated tooth decay can also cause:- Loose teeth
- Gum disease
- Infections
- Staining, yellowing, and discoloration
General Dentistry Programs
To maintain optimal oral health, seeing your dentist at least once a year is imperative. General dentistry programs often see problems caused by neglect, as conditions like tooth decay are progressive. During an annual exam, general dentistry programs can:- Check for cavities and signs of tooth decay
- Remove tartar and plaque from your teeth and gum lines
- Treat discoloration and staining
- Repair chipped, cracked, or damaged teeth
- Extract unrepairable teeth
- Treat crowding and crooked teeth
